Indonesian Navy to Expand Military Sealift Command Fleet

The Indonesian Navy (TNI Angkatan Laut/TNI AL) is set to enhance its Military Sealift Command (Komando Lintas Laut Militer/Kolinlamil) by acquiring additional Landing Platform Dock (LPD) and Landing Ship Tank (LST) vessels.

“We will add more LPDs and then some LSTs to strengthen Military Sealift Command and to transport troops as well,” stated Admiral Muhammad Ali, Chief of Staff of TNI AL, during the command’s 63rd anniversary celebration in Jakarta on Tuesday (2 July), as reported by the Indonesian News Agency, Antara.

He elaborated, “Many of the developments carried out from Sabang to Merauke were transported by ships from the Military Sealift Command. These ships, apart from transporting troops who have been shifted to several places in Indonesia, also transport logistical goods when requested by the ministry and the public.”

Admiral Ali mentioned that this acquisition plan is already included in the Indonesian Navy’s Strategic Plan 2025–2029 and Force Development Posture 2025–2044. The new vessels are planned to be constructed domestically by local shipyards, including the state-owned PT PAL.

“For long-term and medium-term planning, the Indonesian Navy is preparing to build its strength, especially transport ships. Several of these transport ships [will be] made domestically by PT PAL,” he added.

Established on 1 July 1961, the Military Sealift Command is one of the principal command branches of the Indonesian Navy. The organisation is responsible for providing sealift and logistical support to all three services under the Indonesian National Armed Forces (Tentara Nasional Indonesia/TNI) and other government agencies.
