SINGAPORE has received the green light from the US Department of State to potentially purchase 54 AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM).
With a contract value of US$133m, the prospective order will include the 54 AMRAAM missiles, two guidance sections, control section spares, and missile containers. Furthermore, it would cover weapon system support, training support and contractor engineering, technical as well as logistics support services.
With RTX as the primary contractor, the firm’s webpage states, “the AMRAAM is the world’s most sophisticated, combat-proven air dominance weapon. With more than 30 years of design, upgrades, testing and production, the AIM-120 missile continues to meet warfighter requirements in all weather and beyond visual range. Its capabilities have been fully demonstrated in over 4,900 test shots and more than 13 air-to-air combat victories”.
Serving with over 40 countries, the missile system has been integrated with various fighter aircraft, including the F-15, F-16, F/A-18 , F-22, Eurofighter Typhoon, Saab JAS-39 Gripen, Panavia Tornado and the Harrier. The latest AMRAAM is the only radar-guided, air-to-air missile arming the F-35. The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) operates a number of F-15SGs, F-16C/D/D+, and has 20 F-35A and F-35Bs on order.-shp/adj/dl (Pix:RTX,DVIDS)
